As controversy continue to trail the appointment of former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a faction of the party’s faithful called the “PDP Rescue Group”, have continued to kick against the appointment and has called on Mr. Sheriff to step aside.
According to him, the current chairman lacked the integrity that the PDP needed at this time.
The group is calling on the new chairman to resign, as he was never at any time nominated by the northeast wing of the party for the race.
Some of the aggrieve members in attendance include, Dr. Akilu Indabawa; Dr. Umar Ardo; Dr. Pogu Bitrus; former deputy national legal adviser of of the party, Bashir Maidugu; former national publicity secretary and minister of Environment, Chief John Odey, Barr. Kabiru Shittu, Shehu Gabam and Esther Audu.
The PDP had on February 16 appointed Senator Sheriff the party’s new national chairman.
His appointment was made at the meeting of the National Executive Committee held at the opposition party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
Senator Sheriff had been linked with the Boko Haram sect terrorising communities in north eastern Nigeria.
He has denied having a link with the group.
Meanwhile, former ministers of the party are expected to meet tomorrow (Tuesday) in Abuja to deliberate on the PDP new chairmanship crisis and other recent developments in the party.
