The SING Foundation, a non-profit organization, working in the areas of youth involvement, good governance and environmental justice, collaborated with Education As A Vaccine (EVA) to conduct educational outreach programme to female students of secondary school age in commemoration of world menstrual hygiene day.
The world menstrual hygiene day which is held on 28th of may every year, brings attention to issues around menstruation, through education to remove the myths that have come to be associated with menstruation in societies.
The one day outreach programme was held at the Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse in Abuja. The students were educated on menstruation and proper menstrual hygiene management. They were taught how to use cycle beads to count their menstrual cycle, so their periods do not take them unawares and they are able to prepare for their hygiene needs. A quiz and questions and answers session was organized to sharpen their understanding of menstruation, while all the students were given free sanitary napkins.
SING had earlier in the day held a special edition of its flagship talk programme, SING Talk Lounge, where the issues of menstruation were thoroughly dissected by the organization’s Research Manager, Dr. Itari Turner, and Head of Administration, Barr. Gladtimes Okoronkwo. During the programme, which was streamed live on its social media pages, the panellists shared insights from personal experience on how young girls can cope with the psychological and physical challenges that come with menstruation. They also highlighted ways that girls and women can take care of themselves during menstruation.
