A political youth group known as Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO) has called on the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to drop its plan to embark on strike over the new price regime announced by the Federal Government in the interest of Nigerians.
The call was made yesterday in Abuja by the National President of BYO, Comrade Ubale Yusuf Nalado, at a press briefing organised by the group to make its position known on the fuel subsidy removal, deregulation of the petroleum downstream sector, and the planned NLC protest.
Nalado stated that the call was imperative as consultations with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), civil society groups, business associations, and some faction of the NLC revealed that most Nigerians are in support of the oil and gas policies of the President Buhari-led government while condemning any plan by Labour to embark on strike.
“We therefore call on the faction of the Nigerian Labour Congress to have a rethink on their position as the deregulation is the best thing to happen to our economy and support the people-oriented policies of this government,” he said.
The Chairman, BYO Board of Trustees (BOT), and member of the 7th Senate representing Yobe North, Senator Alkali Jajere, who spoke alongside Nalado, said it was time for subsidy to go forever and the money realised from the save be used for infrastructural development and payment of workers’ salaries at all levels in the country, even the constituencies of the NLC members.
Also speaking, the Presidential aspirant of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Murtala Mohammed Sarba, said any opposition to the deregulation of the oil and gas sector is inimical to the already crawling economy, urging NLC and other stakeholders to see the prospects of deregulation and close ranks with this government to attain the desired change.
