Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has donated a vehicle and an office building to the Police Service Commission (PSC) to ease its operations in the state. The governor made the donation when the newly constituted board members of the commission paid him a familiarisation visit.
In the same vein, renown business Tyson, Chief Arthur Eye donated the sum of N20 million to support the development project of the new board of the PSC during their visit to his country home in Enugu.
In what looks like a determination to bequeath to the nation a competent police force, the new set of Board members in the Service Commission yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Enugu State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi before commencing on a working visit to the commissioner of police, Enugu State and Police College Orji.
The commissioners in the persons of Dr. Nkemka Jombo-Ofo the host commissioner in Enugu, Barrister Rommy Mom, Hajia Najatu Muhammed and Mr. Austin Braimoh were recently confirmed as Commissioners in the board of Police Service Commission by the Senate and were sworn in by President Mohamedu Buhari.
On arrival at Lion House Enugu, the quartert were ushered in to see the governor, who was notably elated to receive them.
Governor Ugwuanyi described the job of the Police Service Commission as a thankless job but stated that with the quality of personalities appointed to the commission, he believed that a number of issues affecting the Nigerian Police Force would be effectively resolved.
He called on the commission to see him as a partner in the commission’s mandate to build a police force the Nigerian people could be proud of, before donating a vehicle and a building to the commission to serve as the office of the Police Service Commission in Enugu State. He also promise to sponsor the first strategy retreat for the police service commissioners to be held in Enugu.
Responding the commissioner representing the Chairman of Police Service Commission, Austin Braimoh described Governor Ugwuanyi as an astute administrator and thanked him for his kind gesture. He noted that the Police Service Commission would continue to confer with the governor on the commission’s efforts to build a model police force.
In the bid to fulfill the mandate given to the Commissioners by President Buhari to ensure there is a new face-lift of the Nigerian police, the Commissioners also paid a courtesy call on the commissioner of police Enugu State, Mr. Danmallam Mohammed and together they all visited Police college in Orji. They described as shocking the poor state of the Nigerian Police College.
Irked by the sorry state of the college, the members of the PSC present wondered how such a college meant for the training of new recruits be this decrepit. The sorry state of the college moved the Commissioners to tears, the hotels are without roofs, no water, women bathe outside and turn the nearby bushes to their toilet. After the tour round the college, the commissioners vowed to draw the attention of stakeholders to such an eyesore and promised to give the college a new look in order to increase its capacity to train more students.
Respite thus came when the quartert paid Prince Arthur Eze a courtesy call in his Enugu home. Najatu Muhammed intimated the notable philanthropist and businessman of their visit to the college and the challenges seen firsthand. This prompted Prince Eze to immediately present a cheque of 20 Million Naira to the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State for the immediate renovation of the college. In doing so, Prince Eze thanked the present PSC for such a revelation as he described the college as one of the nation’s leading police institutions in the past, blaming the present situation on previous PSC’s that had neglected the college.
Responding, Barrister Rommy Mom described Prince Eze’s donation as timely and thanked him for granting the commission such audience even at short notice. He promised that the donation would be properly utilized in giving the college the befitting face-lift it deserved.
