Meet Nigeria’s Youngest King, Obi Akaeze 1

On Thursday February 18, 17-year old Chukwuka Noah Ofulue succeeded his father on the throne to become the newest King of Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha local government area, Delta.  His father Obi Edward Akaeze Ofulue III was murdered by his kidnappers in January and buried a day after Obi Akaeze was crowned king. He has now assumed the name Obi Akaeze 1.

This trending story has attracted massive media attention, with many wondering how the teenager would carry out his responsibilities as King and still enjoy his youthful years.

Here are 6 interesting things you should know about the new king:

  1. Obi Akaezeobi 1 was born in London, England and resided there with his mother and siblings before his ascension to the throne.
  2. Prior to his return to Nigeria and subsequent ascension to the throne, he had been schooling in London.
  3. He is 17 years old and will turn 18 later this year.
  4. The 17-year old king has 4 siblings; 3 sisters and a younger brother – Naomi Akaeze Ofulue, Esther Akaeze Ofulue, Ruth Akaeze Ofulue and Nehemiah Akaeze Ofulue.
  5. He had always known he would become king, although not so early, as the Ubulu-Uku monarchy succession line is from a father to his first son.
  6. His late father was kidnapped early in January and was found dead 18 days later.
