Edo Election: PDP Raises Alarm Over Plans To Arrest Leaders, Agents

As Edo State electorates queue to vote on Wednesday for its next governor, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has uncovered plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to arrest its leaders and polling agents on trumped up charges and prevent them from monitoring the elections.

The PDP stated this in a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

The statement reads, “We have discovered plans of the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC) to arrest, intimidate and detain senior members of our Party and our polling unit agents at different polling units across Edo State during the Gubernatorial election slated for tomorrow, September 28th, 2016.

“The objective is to arrest our members and agents at their various polling units on trumped up charges to prevent them from monitoring elections and to enable APC members and colluding staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to manipulate the elections.

“The desperation of the ruling APC to manipulate the elections is worrisome and an indication of the willingness of the Party to disrupt the will of the people and destabilise democracy in Nigeria.

“We reiterate our previous warnings that we will not stand idly aside and watch several years of democratic progress be derailed by a Party with no respect for the principles of democracy.

“We ask all well meaning Nigerians to urge APC to desist from these acts which are capable of leading to a breakdown of law and order, and are capable of derailing our democracy.

“God bless Edo State. God bless Nigeria.”
