Today at an interactive session with Landlords and Landladies at Upper mission area in ward 7 of Oredo West constituency, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Hon. Eghosa Asemota Agbonifo was charged not to follow the footsteps of the conventional politicians of the old order.
Addressing the meeting, the chairman of the association, Bar. AB Thomas told the candidate of the unity and political consciousness of its members. He narrated how previous political candidates have come to seek their electoral support, only to abscond after emerging victorious. He made it clear that members of his association don’t sell votes, and he can be quoted anywhere. While they might not be compelled on who to give their votes, they however always follow who appeals to their sense of reasoning.
The eldest man in the association who also spoke counselled the candidate not to joke with his integrity and character. “You are young,” he said, “please do not follow the path of conventional politicians that say what they can’t do, and when they emerge they start running”. “Try as much as you can not to soil your name during your stay in office”, he added.
Other members of the association lamented how the electricity problem in the area has been terribly bad, despite the efforts they have made to address the problems on their own. He pleaded with the candidate to make a commitment to help in providing them with a new transformer when elected into office.
The candidate thanked them for welcoming him, promising that the counsel they’ve given him will not be disposed nor forgotten in a hurry. He told them that he too is not ready to buy votes, as he cannot be part of the very same thing he wants to change. With respect to the new transformer the community urgently needs, he made a financial pledge to send his widow’s mite. He thanked them once more and the campaign train moved to another location.
