CSOs Vow To Shutdown Abuja, Demand Emefiele CBN Governor’s Resignation

A coalition of civil society organisations and Abuja Grassroots Projects (AGP) have vowed to stage a mass protest Iith the intention of shutting down the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) should the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele fails to resign before Thursday, September 23, 2021.

Coordinator of AGP, Comrade Ahmadul Yusuf in a press briefing said that they desire to support the call for the resignation of the Governor was as a result of his inability to stabilise the country’s economy, added that he has used his hidden agenda to discredit President Muhammad Buhari’s administration through his anti peoples oriented policies.

The groups blamed the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele’s economy policies for impoverishing Nigerians, thereby demanding that President Buhari should harken to voice of Nigerian youths by immediately sacking the CBN Governor to save the country from total collapse.

“We are making this demand because it has become necessary following the extensive review of the tenure of Mr Emefiele, as the head of our apex bank, which has come to the sad conclusion that he should humbly step aside and allow a more competent person to step in to save our country from total collapse.

“However, if he insist on staying put in the office as the CBN boss, we will shutdown the entire CBN office and ensure he resigns because enough is enough. Nigeria’s economy is going down the drain, people are suffering because of the failed economy of this country, which is as a result of the failed policies of Emefiele’s leadership.

“We have made our investigation and gathered that he is working with the opposition political party to frustrate this administration. We also learnt that he has a secret plan to sponsor a presidential candidate against the wish of this administration.

“So, we are in support of the early demand made by Arewa Youth Assembly Speaker, Mohammed Salihu who stated that his organisation has given Mr Emefiele three options to either resign voluntarily, get sacked by President Buhari or youths will occupy the CBN premises in their numbers until he resigns,” he said.

They also lamented that the Central Bank under Mr. Emiefele has performed so woefully that the Nigerian economy that was termed one of the fastest growing on the globe before his emergence as governor, has become a mirage compared to the smallest economy in Africa.

“Everyone can attest to the fact that since Mr. Emiefele took over the leadership of the apex bank of Nigeria, the Naira, which is our official currency of transactions was exchanging against the dollar for $1 to ₦170 but today, it has gone from bad to worst, that $1 is now N550. This is sad!

“Most pitiable fact is that the naira runs at parity with the CFA, which used to be 1000CFA to ₦365, and by projections, it can only go worst, all this is a result of incompetence on the side of the management of the CBN occasioned by greed, corruption unfriendly policies and the lack of desire to do what is right.

“The failure coefficient of Mr Emiefele is beyond imagination, yet the government turned deaf ears when there was a public call for Mr President not to reappoint him for a second term in office, today, the fear of many Nigerians is manifesting in how fast the Nigerian economy is taking a nose dive, reasons the rise in inflation is at it all time high,” he said.
