AN APPROACH THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT CAN USE TO RESTART THE ECONOMY FOLLOWING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN

By; Theophilus Aimiebenomon

Firstly, a policy statement should be released that acknowledges the importance of:

  1. Restarting the economy through a gradual approach that protects the health of Nigerians, including high-risk groups
  2. Ensuring public health capacity to address future waves of the virus
  3. Supporting a range of economic sectors and Nigerian workers.

Secondly, these four main principles should be identified and adopted:

  1. Taking a science and evidence-based approach
  2. Promoting decision-making, coordination, and collaboration between the federal government and all States in the country
  3. Continued accountability and transparency of both federal and state governments
  4. Flexibility and proportionality as information changes over time.

CRITERIA and MEASURES that must be in place in order to restart the economy:👇👇

  1. COVID-19 transmission is controlled, new cases are contained at a level that the health care system can manage.
  2. Sufficient public health capacity is in place to TEST, TRACE, ISOLATE and CONTROL the spread of the virus.
  3. Expanded health care capacity exists to support all needs, including COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients.
  4. Supports are in place for vulnerable groups, communities, and key populations.
  5. Support and monitoring of workplace protocols are in place.
  6. Restrictions on non-essential travel are eased and managed in a coordinated manner.
  7. Communities are supported in managing local disease activity.
