Agric Minister, Poultry Industry Association Meet To Chart Way Forward For Sector

Leadership of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), yesterday, had an emergency meeting with the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, at the Minister’s Conference Hall of the Ministry.

In a presentation made by the group titled “The Nigerian Poultry Industry: Current Realities And The Very Urgent Need To Save The Poultry Industry”.

The Association thanked the Honourable Minister for his immediate response to its letter on the present situation and its willingness to chart a road map for the sustenance of the Nigerian Poultry Industry especially as it relates with the pronouncement by the CBN that it is removing restrictions on the allocation of forex for certain products including poultry products.

The group reiterates that they are aware that Government has come up with various agricultural programmes and policies to boost poultry production, they continued that they are specifically aware of the new policy thrust of Agriculture under the Honourable Minister, and that the poultry industry remains committed to his vision of making sure Nigeria becomes Food and Nutrition secured.

The Association spoke on their fears and the heightened tensions, apprehensions and fears over the entire poultry landscape in the country at the moment, especially concerning the import restrictions place on the importation of poultry and poultry products of Eggs and Chickens into the country.

In his response, the Honourable Minister appreciated the leadership of the Association for coming forward. In his words, “I want to extend my warmest welcome to the delegation from the Poultry Association of Nigeria, led by Chief Sunday Ezeobiora, National President. We are gathered here today to address critical issues facing the Nigerian poultry industry, a sector of immense importance to our nation’s economy and food security.”

“I acknowledge the pivotal role played by the poultry industry in the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector over the last two decades. It is commendable that Nigeria has consistently held its position as the leading egg producer in Africa, a testament to the industry’s resilience and potential.”

“Furthermore, the poultry sector’s contribution of over 25 percent to the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP) underscores its significance in our economic landscape. This industry has not only provided affordable animal protein sources but has also created over 20 million direct and indirect employment opportunities, empowering women and youth across the nation.”

“The poultry industry’s impact on food security cannot be overstated. Its demand for maize and soybeans significantly stimulates crop production, thereby reinforcing the stability of our agricultural ecosystem. Additionally, poultry production stands as a beacon for attracting private investments, which are crucial for our nation’s agricultural advancement.”

“I am acutely aware of the challenges facing the poultry industry, particularly the recent policy shifts concerning the importation of poultry and poultry products. The concerns raised by the Association are valid, and we must approach them with a strategic perspective.”

“In conclusion, I believe that with collective effort, we can navigate the current challenges and steer the poultry industry towards sustainable growth. Let us prioritize action, policy reforms, and a favorable business environment to ensure the success of this critical sector.”
