As Nigeria joined the rest of the nations to celebrate the 2016 World Money Week’’ 9, the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) has reiterated it resolve to double its efforts and activities in the area of financial literacy programme for children and youths.
The commission stated this while receiving delegation of World Assembly of Youth (WAY) led by it Vice president Comrade Preye J. Ketebu-Brown in Company of a National Multi-stakeholders Forum led by Amb. Prince Felix Ihonre as part of a solidarity visit to the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria in commemoration of the week.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the director-general of Commission, Head of Corporate Communication, Mr. Naif Abdussalam, expressed appreciation of management for the visit and the honour done SEC by her inclusion in the Global Money Week 2016 celebrations saying that work on including financial literacy education in the educational curriculum as initiated by SEC is almost concluded.
He added that SEC has introduced “Financial Literacy Clubs” in some schools across the federation.
Earlier, Ketebu-Brown enlightened the SEC on WAY’s partnership with Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI) at the global level to ensure full participation of Regional and National Youth Councils across the World including Regional stakeholder youth organizations based in Nigeria such as the Network of Young Female Leaders of the ECOWAS Community (ROAJELF) and the Nigeria Youth Parliament (NYP).
While Prince Felix said the Global Money Week was a program marked in March every year to raise awareness on the need for financial inclusion of Children and Youth in Financial matters alongside advocacy on finance related ills such as Corruption, Money Laundering, Financial Crime among others.
“All of which aggravate under-development and poverty in developing Countries especially in Africa. The theme “Take Part, Save Smart” required elaborate sensitization with visits to relevant institutions for them to ‘take part’ in heightening awareness on the culture of ‘Saving’ amongst Children and Youths,” he said.
He mentioned that the GMW 2016 Week long activities will be rounded-up with a “Peace and Unity Concert Against Corruption” to be held at the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Abuja.
