There is tension in the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) as some members of the governing council of the institution are clamouring for the removal of the vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Austine Angba.
These group of people are currently pressing home their demand but some stakeholders in the education sector have faulted them that have no power and right to demand for the suspension or sack of a sitting vice chancellor with sterling achievements and performance index.
Sources at the citadel maintained that the ongoing onslaught has nothing to do with the welfare of workers as the university is up to date with payment of salaries and earned allowances, but have a lot to do with the fact that the Vice Chancellor is from the Northern part of the state
According to some of them, students of the university are already planning to stage a mega protest across the various campuses over the distractions targeted at the unblemished VC who has repositioned the institution in line global best practices with his hard work and people oriented policies.
They maintained that the ongoing move is unconnected with the welfare of members as is usually the case, but about tribe, personal issues and unsubstantiated claims being advanced by those who were said to have lost out in their pursuit for the vice chancellorship position, and are hell bent on scuttling the tenure of office of the current VC.
It was gathered that the policies of Professor Angba with regards to financial management is one of the best so far and most staff at the management level are comfortable with, but the lingering crises is witch hunt and ethnicity.
A University source who confirmed the development to our correspondent said what is playing out is all targeted at Prof Angba which will pave way for the emergence of a certain Professor as the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution. The University Council is set to meet today and some frivolous allegations have been lined up to be used to suspend the Vice Chancellor whose tenure is remaining almost two years to elapsed.
Investigations has revealed that the Governor, His Excellency , Senator Bassey Otu is not aware of this plot but would definitely wade in to halt the illegal attempt to remove the Vice Chancellor.
