Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI) on Wednesday announced its support for a comprehensive audit of the Treasury Single Account (TSA). The organization made this known through a press statement released and signed by its Executive Director, Olusegun Elemo who highlighted the importance of audit of all federal government’s accounts which includes the Treasury Single Account.
Olusegun Elemo said “we were also alarmed to have heard the country’s Auditor-General during his engagement with Legislators on audit status of TSA that after two years of full blown operation of the account, there is yet to be any performance audit carried out on monies expended from that account to determine whether value was achieved for every expenditure”
“As a Civil Society Organization working to simplify audit data for citizens’ engagement with a view to ensuring value for money especially on capital projects, we are in total support for a holistic audit of the TSA by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation which is constitutionally empowered to do so”
“It is not sufficient to assume that public expenditure made from that account have passed the tests of effectiveness, efficiency and economy to offer citizens and tax payers due value”
“The Auditor-General has the responsibility to adequately inform Nigerians on the usage of public funds irrespective of the terminology used to classify the account where such funds are domiciled. Our organization is waiting to see the report of the Auditor-General on this exercise”.
“While we understand that funds moved into the TSA in the last two years were not free but meant for different MDAs, the account witnessed an estimated sum of 7trillion naira as at March 2017. It is consequently important to have prioritized transparency and accountability in the disbursement and utilization of these funds so citizens can get due benefits”.
We therefore call on citizens to be on the lookout for the Auditor-General’s opinion on the comprehensive audit of the Treasury Single Account and to adequate engage public officials and elected representatives where necessary.
PLSI is a non-governmental organization working with mandate to ensure leadership accountability, good governance and development of local communities in Nigeria.
