England is making a last minute attempt to stop Arsenal’s young striker Alex Iwobi from committing his international future to Nigeria before Friday’s Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt, the UK’s Daily Mirror reports.
The 19-year-old who has started three of Arsenal’s last four games has played for England Under-16, U17 and U18 sides before choosing to represent Nigeria – his country of birth.
Iwobi, a nephew of former Super Eagles legend Jay Jay Okocha, has played in two friendlies for Nigeria, but won’t be officially tied to them until he plays a competitive game.
The teenager has been named in Nigeria’s squad for the games against Egypt on 26 and 29 March, but the England Football Association is making a desperate effort to persuade him to change his mind, the Daily Mirror added.
